REGULAR SEASON INSTRUCTION (September-June)

REGULAR SEASON INSTRUCTION

The regular season runs simultaneously with the school year, September-June. During the regular season our main instruction is weekly small group training. Occasional private/semi-private lessons for visiting skaters and “tune-up” lessons for current students are also available during off-peak hours on a case-by-case basis.

*No regular season ColdRush instruction occurs on weekends, afternoons, or evenings.

WEEKLY SMALL GROUP TRAINING

During the regular season, our primary instruction is weekly 45-minute small group hockey skating training sessions for travel players and advanced adult leaguers. These classes are held Monday-Friday mornings from 6-9am at the Ashburn Ice House & Medstar Capitals IcePlex.  Classes are divided by age and level and students sign up in advance for 4-6 week blocks.
The overwhelming majority of our skaters continue to sign up to throughout the year and remain in the same time slot for their weekly small group lesson all season long. Current students are given priority registration before we accept new skaters into these sessions so while it’s possible, it can be difficult to break into ColdRush instruction mid-year.
Due to the amount of information our students build on throughout the year, new student acceptances are put on hold between April 1st and the start of our summer program in June. New students are accepted in the summer program.

During the weekly small group lessons, Wendy Marco breaks skating skills down to their smallest parts and works with the skaters to correct, refine, and re-build the skills and then uses repetition to make the improved form a kinetic memory. Pucks, speed, and compete drills are added to test and improve mastery of the skills and once proficiency is demonstrated, the skills are used in  combination. The teaching progression developed through Wendy Marco’s 30 years as a hockey skating coach has proven to produce some of the most powerful, fastest, and agile skaters in the game. Our students aren’t just great skaters, they are informed students. Our skaters know how and why they are using the techniques they have been taught. We believe our dedication to this process is the reason that our skaters stand out and are frequently identified by professional, college, and prep school coaches throughout North America as being ColdRush skaters.

DROP-IN PRIVATE/SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS & “TUNE-UPS”

Wendy and Olympic Gold Medalist, Haley Skarupa, after a drop-in lesson.

During the regular season, professional, college, junior, prep school, and visiting players can contact lessons@ColdRushhHockey.com for drop-in private/semi-private lessons.

Tune-up lessons are occasionally available on a case-by-case basis during the regular season by contacting lessons@coldrushhockey.com. Tune-up lessons are not intended to take the place of regular small group training, but rather to supplement as needed. Tune-up lessons are useful in a variety of situations, such as; a skater returning to the ice after an extended absence, a skater suddenly developing a bad habit that is negatively impacting their game, or a student that feels they need additional coaching on a particularly problematic skill covered in class. Regular season private lessons & tune-ups are scheduled individually and are held T, W, or Th in Ashburn 8:15-9am (not available on most holidays).
