Student Policies & Information

Student Rules

BE RESPECTFUL. All students and their parents are expected to treat lesson mates, fellow parents, ColdRush & rink staff, & other rink patrons with respect. Inappropriate language, spitting on the ice, talking negatively about other players or coaches, yelling, rude or disrespectful behavior is not tolerated.

TRY! Effort is our primary expectation. Talent and experience are not pre-requisites, but self-motivation is! Students unwilling to try their best will be removed from the schedule regardless of parent/coach wishes.

Paying for Ice

Paying for Ice
The ice fee is a separate charge which must be paid to the rinks where we teach for the use of the ice. Traditionally students have paid for their ice separate from private lessons, but we used to include the ice fee in the cost of our pay-in-advance programs and pay it on behalf of our skaters to the rinks, however, during the Pandemic both the Ashburn Ice House and Capitals Iceplex introduced the DASH pass program to track who was entering the building and directly collect the ice fee. The DASH pass is still being utilized by both rinks and for the foreseeable future all students have to pay for their ice separately from the instruction, directly to the rink, using the DASH pass app. DASH instructions are sent to all ColdRush students when their instruction is confirmed.

The ice fee varies depending on the rink and the amount of sessions a patron purchases at a time, but the average rate is around $15 per session.

Inclement Weather Policy

*** COLDRUSH DOES NOT FOLLOW THE SCHOOLS! ***

When the weather is inclement and travel to the rink is dangerous we will cancel our lessons. We do NOT base our cancellations on the schools’ decisions so please check our website whenever the weather is questionable. In the event of a cancellation we will make the announcement through twitter by 5AM for morning lessons and by NOON for afternoon lessons. Our tweets are visible in the bottom right corner of our home page and are also posted to our Facebook page. We are working on setting up a text system so that we will be able to send texts to those students that have opted in for urgent text messages when lessons are cancelled. We hope to have that in place before the first snowfall, but please don’t count on that until we’ve made the announcement.
If we have not cancelled lessons but you believe the roads are unsafe, use your own best judgment. You will not be penalized for missed lessons due to inclement weather as long as you submit a cancellation prior to your lesson time.

Canceling a Lesson

Our pay-in-advance programs, such as the Small Group Training, Spring Training, and the Summer Program, can not be cancelled for a refund except in the case of extreme need, such as a long term injury or COVID illness/contact.

For our semi-private and private lessons, students are excused from payment for missed lessons as long as the cancellation is submitted at least 24 hours before the scheduled lesson. In the case of an emergency or acute illness, notification prior to the lesson will be sufficient as long as extenuating circumstances are explained in the message. Other forms of notification, such as telling your instructor or sending a text or email, while appreciated, will not serve as officially cancelling your lesson. Students will be charged full price for lessons that are not cancelled according to policy.

*** Excessive cancellations, even excused cancellations, and excessive absences even when the instruction is paid for,  will result in the loss of your lesson spot.

Suspending/Discontinuing Your Lessons

Suspending your lesson: If your student is injured or has an extenuating circumstance which requires that they suspend their lesson for an extended period of time but is planning to return, in many cases we are able to place a long term sub in suspended lesson spots until the student is able to return.  We require two weeks advanced notice to suspend lessons, except in the event of a true emergency.

Discontinuing your lesson: If you find it necessary to discontinue your lessons for the season, we require two weeks advanced notice by filling out our Suspend/Discontinue form. The risk of injury from the activities involved in the Programs is significant, including the potential for permanent paralysis and death, and while particular rules, equipment and personal discipline may reduce the risk, the risk of serious injury does exist; and I knowingly and freely assume all such risks, both known and unknown, even if arising from the negligence of the Releasees listed below or others or hidden, latent, or obvious defects in the equipment, premises, or facilities used. I further state that I am in proper physical condition to participate in the Programs. I assume full responsibility for my participation, and I willingly agree to comply with the stated and customary terms and conditions for my participation. If, however, I observe and unusual significant hazard during my presence or participation, I will remove myself from participation and bring such hazard to the attention of the nearest official immediately. I understand that participants in the Progams will be training with and utilizing customized equipment and that timing devices may be employed.

I, for myself, and on behalf of my heirs, assigns, personal representatives and next of kin, hereby release and hold harmless Ashburn ice House, CRP Management Group Inc., Kettler Capitals IcePlex, their officers, officials, agents, contractors, and/or employees, other participants, Wendy marco, ColdRush, and SkatePower LLC, and their instructors, contractors and/or employees (“Releasees”) with respect to any and all liability, claims, injury, disability, death or loss, or damage to person or property, whether arising from the negligence, both passive or active, of the Releasees or otherwise. I have read this waiver of liability and assumption of risk agreement, and I fully understand its terms. I understand that I have given up substantial rights by signing it, and I sign this waiver and release freely and voluntarily without any inducement.

What to Wear

ALL PROGRAMS:
ColdRush jerseys are provided for camps, Spring Training, the Summer Program, and clinics, and should be worn for these programs. ANY team jersey may be worn for semi-private, private lessons, and small group regular season training.
*PLEASE NOTE: Attire that represents/advertises any hockey school, camp, or instructional program other than ColdRush is not permitted.

HOCKEY SKILLS LESSONS, CAMPS, & SPRING TRAINING:
Full gear is required.

HOCKEY SKATING LESSONS:
Helmet, gloves, shin guards, mouth guard, and stick* are required. Full gear is encouraged. (While the majority of our lessons are taught on private lesson ice, rarely we may offer a lesson on a public session. Hockey sticks are not permitted on public sessions)

GOALIES: We recommend that peewee and younger goalies wear skater gear to all instructional programs unless they are taking shots or otherwise advised by their instructor. Bantam goalies please ask your instructor. Midget and older goalies may wear full goalie gear, but this gear is NEVER to be used as an excuse to skip a single drill or push at a lesser pace than the rest of the students on the ice!
